Preview: Girl Gang Manchester #2 – Bridesmaids

Following the sell-out success of last year’s Mean Girls event, Girl Gang Manchester are back. It’s hard to believe that it’s a whole year since the feminist collective transformed Hope Mill Theatre into a pink, sparkling Spring Fling for Mean Girls – you can read my review of their first Manchester event here.

Their second immersive screening takes place on Saturday 11th March as a headline event for this year’s Wonder Women Festival. This time the featured film is 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids. Like Mean Girls, this enduringly popular film broke new ground satirising the “chick flick” genre – largely thanks to its female writing team, talented comic cast and witty observations about female friendships, sex, social events and life crises. And of course, it features a girl gang.

So, what can you expect from Girl Gang Mancester #2? The tunnels of brand new arts venue 53two will be transformed into a bridal shower and wedding reception for the event. You can make a paper flower bouquet, have a game of table tennis, or get a manicure at the nail bar. Workshop sessions include improvised comedy, fascinator making and “seeing you look ugly kind of makes me happy” – a workshop designed to replace competitiveness witha feeling of sisterhood.

Between writing in the guest book and posing at the dress up photo booth, guests can get refreshments including “Rockin Sushi,” macarons, a chocolate fountain and of course prosecco. Following my burst of creativity at last year’s cookie-decorating stall, I’m particularly excited for the “Cake Baby” decorating and tasting (!) table.

The Bridesmaids screening itself will be preceded by an academic introduction and Maids of Dishonour, a special theatrical tribute to the film. The night will end with a disco, as all weddings should, so get practising your moves to Wilson Phillips.

If, like Annie, you’re ready to parrrrrrtayyyyy then don’t stick around – tickets are a mere £15 and can be booked here.

See you at 53two – I’ll be the one in the toiilet paper wedding gown.
